Lost Colony of Roanoke

From the Series Mysteries in History

In 1587, a group of about 100 English colonists settled on what is now Roanoke, North Carolina. The colony's leader left for supplies, and when he returned, he discovered the settlement was empty. The only clues left behind were two carvings. What happened to the lost colony? In Lost Colony of Roanoke, early fluent readers will learn about the attempts to build a colony on Roanoke, the disappearance of more than 100 people, and the theories about what may have happened to them. Readers practice critical thinking skills to draw their own conclusions about what happened to the colonists. Vibrant, full-color photos and carefully leveled text will engage young readers as they learn about possible explanations.

A Take a Look! infographic offers a visual look at the timeline of the settlement, sidebars present interesting, supplementary information about the colony, and a Quick Facts section recaps events detailed in the book. Children can learn more about the Roanoke Colony using our safe search engine that provides relevant, age-appropriate websites.
