Light and Sound

From the Series Foundations of Physics

In Light and Sound, early fluent readers will learn how light and sound and the physics behind them impact our universe every day. Vibrant, full-color photos and carefully leveled text will engage young readers as they learn more about the laws, history, and applications of these foundational STEM concepts.

Infographics and sidebars present interesting, supplementary information, and an activity offers readers an opportunity to extend discovery. Children can learn more about light and sound using our safe search engine that provides relevant, age-appropriate websites. Light and Sound also features reading tips for teachers and parents, a table of contents, a glossary, and an index. Light and Sound is part of Jump!’s Foundations of Physics series.

Light and Sound - Reviewed by Booklist

Using straightforward yet clear text in a large font, this installment in the Foundations of Physics series (6 titles) offers a basic introduction to the physical concepts of light and sound. Starting with light, it explains how light travels in waves, as well as such related terms as reflection and refraction, all bolded and defined in the glossary. The section on sound builds upon light, describing how it, too, travels in waves and how different substances (solid, liquid, and air) affect how fast sound moves. This section ends with a brief explanation of how light and sound often work together. Aiding comprehension are crisp, colorful photos with labeled terms, a chart of the visible light spectrum, and sidebars with added facts. A culminating activity reinforces the concepts for beginning science learners.
