Los mapaches
This cute, raccoon primer in the Animales en tu jardín (Backyard Animals) series (8 titles)
teaches vocabulary that applies to many animals. Although there are only a few words per page, the use of vivid, high-quality photographs of creatures in different situations gives plenty of opportunity for commentary and interaction between a young reader and adult. The book contains no translations, only Spanish text, but the images are labeled well and the font is large and easy to read. Besides the labels, everything is expressed in simple sentences at a kindergarten reading level. Some of the terms taught are the Spanish words for paws, fur, fingers, and mask. Also contained is an overview of words, accompanied by thumbnails, as well as a concluding review and index. Perfect for pre- and beginning readers.
